The best part of relocating your pet to South Korea is that Korean Air allows you to carry your pets along with you. You can carry 1 pet on board and 2 as check-in luggage.

To carry your pet on Korean Air flights you will have to follow the below-given process:

1. Travel Planning

You have to confirm your pet travels at least 48 hours before traveling. Your pet will be allocated a designated seat on the flight. For sending your pets through check-in luggage a proper carrier will be required.

2. Follow South Korean Pet Import Rules and Regulations

Some of the mandates that South Korean authorities have imposed on pet imports to South Korea are:

  • ● Your dog has to be at least 90 days old for traveling to South Korea.
  • ● Microchip implantation is a must to get a permit to relocate your pet to South Korea. Microchip has to be ISO certified. It can either be an implantation type or a necklace type. The microchip acts as an identity of your pet animal.
  • ● Rabies-neutralizing antibody tests are a must. The test results should be below 0.5IU/㎖, or else your pet has to undergo an extended quarantine in South Korea, before being released to enter the country.
  • ● You need to present a health certificate issued by the Indian government agency. This health certificate should carry the microchip number and rabies-neutralizing antibody test results.
  • ● Your pet has to undergo a medical examination upon arrival in South Korea. If all the paperwork is complete and your pet is confirmed healthy, it can be released on the day of arrival.
  • ● If your pet is not microchipped and has not undergone a rabies test, the process will take place in South Korea, at your expense and your pet will be kept in Quarantine Facility.
  • ● In the absence of a health certificate, your pet will be returned to India, at your expense.
  • ● The average extended period for quarantine is 10 days but it can be further increased depending upon the condition of your pet.
  • ● If you aim to relocate more than 10 pets to South Korea, you will have to seek special permission from the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA). An additional approval will be required from the quarantine facility.

3. Use a Proper Pet Carrier

Your pets can only be relocated in a proper pet carrier. For carrying your pet on board, the total weight of the pet + carrier should be 7kg or less. For pets traveling as checked pets, the total weight of the pet + carrier can be 45 kg or less.

Guidelines to follow while choosing the pet carrier.

  • ● It should have enough space for the pet to stand, lay down, and move around.
  • ● It should be water-resistant.
  • ● It should be well-ventilated.
  • ● The lock had to be strong and should not be opened by any internal force.
  • ● It should not have wheels or other parts enabling its free movement.
  • ● It should be firm and made of sturdy material like metal, plastic, or wood.

4. Arrival and Check-in

For a comfortable start to your journey, reach the airport at least 3 hours before the flight departure. The Pet travel incurs an additional charge regardless of your baggage.
