• The first step is to microchip your pet with a 15 digit ISO-compliant pet microchip.
• All pets must have proof of the current rabies vaccination.
• Other vaccinations include, for dogs: Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, and Parovirus. For cats: Feline Vioral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia.
• Your dog must test negative for the following tests- Brucella Canis, Serum Agglutination/Giemsa smear, Trypanosoma Evansi Card, Agglutination/Giemsa smear, Babesia Gibsoni Giemsa smear, Dirofilaria immitis Microfilaria filtration test, Leishmaniaspps. Indirect Fluorescent antibody test or ELISA.
• An import permit from the Veterinary Services is required when importing pets to Ghana. The application should be made after the blood tests are done and the permit is valid for 8 weeks after issuance.
• A licensed veterinarian must complete the Veterinary Certificate for Ghana prior to travel.
• Pets must enter Ghana via Kotoka International Airport.
• Pets can arrive in the cabin, as checked baggage or as air cargo.
• All pets must be free of evidence of disease communicable to humans when examined at the port of entry.
• Ghana does not publish a list of banned breeds.
