American Airlines International Pet Policy
We are pet parents, of course, and the safety and comfort of our pets are our priority.
With different airlines having different guidelines for transporting pets from one location to another, it becomes very challenging to create a smooth air travel experience for our pets. Apart from the anxiety of leaving your pet caged in the travel kennel for hours, meeting all the guidelines and completing the documentation, can be an added headache.
To lessen your worries, we have assimilated American Airlines Pet Travel Policy to make your job easier while transporting your pets on American Airlines.
Domestic Flights and Smaller Pets
For pets travelling within North America; to Puerto Rico, or Hawaii, and the combined weight of the pet is under 100 pounds including the kennel, with the kennel no larger than 36" x 26" x 28" are booked as Priority Parcel Service(PPS).
International Flights and Larger Pets
The ExpediteFS service is used for pets flying internationally, or in case they are over the PPS weight and container restrictions. ExpediteFS features premium, flight-specific shipping, priority boarding, and handling for pets.
Charges and Discounts
The American Airlines handling fee when transporting a pet is $150. For those who are travelling with cats or dogs on PCS or TDY Military orders, American Airlines gives a 50% discount for active-duty military personnel. For this, military personnel must be able to show a copy of the valid military ID to scan and an electronic copy of PCS or TDY orders.
Refund Policy
If American Airlines cannot offer corresponding services on their PPS flights, they will refund 25 per cent of the freight charges. Under the same conditions, 100 per cent money back of freight charges will be offered on ExpediteFS flights. Weather-related delays, mechanical failures, labour strikes, civil commotion, federal regulations, and any other circumstances beyond airline control shall not receive refunds.
Veterinary Support
The pet shall be provided with veterinary treatment in case of illness or injury. If the illness or injury is caused by a pre-existing condition, all costs shall be the customer's responsibility. By signing this Customer Acknowledgment Form, the owner authorizes American Airlines to transport the pet without limitations and acknowledges that American Airlines shall not be liable for any veterinary bills or damages arising from any illness or injury to the pet.
Temperature Limits
Pets are only shipped on the ground in temperatures from 45°F to 85°F. If the temperatures rise above 85°F or below 20°F, pets are not shipped. A letter from a licensed veterinarian is required for shipment between 20°F and 44°F, detailing the exact minimum temperature tolerable to the pet. These temperature restrictions do not apply to cold-blooded animals; however, they must still be packed following the IATA Live Animal Regulations. If temperatures reach unsafe levels during the trip, pets will be delivered to a local kennel where they will be cared for free of charge until it is safe to resume travel.

Some Airbus models do not accept pets in the cabin or as checked baggage, except for the flights between JFK and LAX or SFO.
- Tropical fish, lobsters, and other aquatics are accepted on all aircraft types.
- Restricted breeds of dogs- Bulldogs, Pit Bulls, Boxers,
