Booking Pet Travel
Steps to Book
- Book Your Ticket: Begin with the purchase of your passenger ticket at https://www.alaskaair.com.
- Review Pet Policies: Before finalizing your reservation, please review Alaska Airlines' pet travel policies and guidelines. You must also read various documentation requirements, pet carrier and breed restrictions. Remember that pet reservations are made based on the availability of space, so make sure to make a prior reservation.
- Call Alaska Airline Reservations: You can book a seat for your pet on your flight by calling 1-800-252-7522.
Pets that Travel In the Cabin
General Information
Allowed Pets: Small dogs, house cats, domesticated rabbits, and household birds. Only dogs and cats are accepted on flights that go to Hawaii and international destinations.
Booking and Rules
Reservation: Early booking should be done by calling 1-800-252-7522. The reservations need to be made before all the available seats are booked.
Age Limit: Travelers with pets in the cabin must be at least 18 years old.
Seating Limitations: You are not permitted to be seated in an emergency exit row with any pet, or in a bulkhead row.
Pet Carrier: Your pet must be kept inside a pet kennel to be placed under the seat. The pet will count towards your carry-on bag.
Two Pets: You may transport two pet carriers in the cabin, as long as the adjacent seat is purchased for the second carrier, to adhere to the asset policies.
In-Cabin Carrier Specifications:
- Hard-sided Carrier: 17" x 11" x 7.5"
- Soft-sided Carrier: 17" x 11" x 9.5".
Carrier Requirements: The carrier should be clean, leak-proof, and have absorbent bedding with adequate ventilation. It also needs to be escape-proof and should fit under the seat in front of you.
Preparing for In-Cabin Travel
Acclimate Your Pet: Be sure that your pet is comfortable in its carrier. Give your pet some training for a few days before the day of travel to acclimatize it with its carrier.
No Sedation: We do not advise putting your pets under any kind of sedation since the effects of tranquillizers at a high altitude are normally unpredictable. Make sure to consult your veterinarian if needed.
Traveling in the Cargo Deck
General Information
Permitted Pets: Dogs, cats, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, pet birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits and tropical fish. Only dogs and cats are permitted on trips to Hawaii and international destinations only.
Booking and Guidelines
Reservation: Reserve a space for your pet in the baggage compartment through their Reservation Centers by calling 1-800-252-7522 or initiating a chat on the website. You can do this by going to the official website of the airline. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis and the number of seats is limited.
Weight Limit: The pet and carrier's combined weight can be no more than 150 lbs. For a combined weight over 150 lbs, you need to contact Pet Connect™ service.
Health Certificate: Your pet should have a health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian. It should be done not more than 10 days before traveling but if you are returning using the same ticket it can be 30 days old.
Specifications for Carriers Used for the Baggage Compartment:
Size: Spacious enough for the pet to stand, turn around and lie down.
Construction: The carrier should be made up of solid material constructed for air transportation. The carrier should have handles or handholds to allow lifting without tipping and shall have sufficient means of ventilation. The carrier must be free from cracks, damaged, sharp points, or edges.
Security: The crate must be inescapable by latch with a metal grated door fastened with releasable zip ties (purchased at Alaska Airlines). Cages with plastic doors, or those fastened with a lock, are not acceptable.
Special Considerations
Brachycephalic Breeds: Brachycephalic dogs or those with very flat faces are not allowed to travel in the luggage compartment. Small dogs that can be fitted inside a carrier under the seat, can be accommodated with cabin class.
Feeding Before Traveling: Food and water may be given not later than 4 hours before checking in. You are supposed to complete a Pet Check document to verify this.
During the Travel Process: You should ensure your pets have sufficient food and water that can last throughout the journey. If there will be long enough time for a connection, you should request to have access to your pet so you can give them more food and water too.
