Essentials for Pet Export from India to Japan

To import a pet to Japan you must fulfill the import requirement and should procure the necessary certificate. Here is a step-by-step guide to relocating pets from India to Japan.

1. Microchip

The first step towards relocating a pet to Japan is to get it microchipped. The microchip acts as an identity for your pet. It should be ISO 11784 and 11785 certified. Since Japan has only ISO-certified microchip readers installed, if your dog is administered a non-ISO-compliant microchip, you will have to contact the Animal Quarantine Service, to get the appropriate reader ready to get the chip identified.

2. Rabies Vaccination

The pets have to be vaccinated for rabies twice after getting microchipped. There are certain rules that you need to abide by for getting your pet vaccinated for rabies as a precautionary step to travel to Japan.

  • ● Your pet has to be at least 91 days old to get the vaccine.
  • ● Vaccines should be administered after microchip administration. If not, the vaccine has to be repeated.
  • ● The second vaccine has to be administered at least 30 days after the 1st shot but within the effective period of the 1st shot.
  • ● Only inactivated virus vaccines are considered.
  • ● If the effective period of the second vaccine expires before the departure date, a third shot has to be given.

3. Rabies antibody test

You will have to submit the Rabies antibiotics test report stating Antibody titer against rabies must be equal to or greater than 0.5 IU/ml. The blood sample must be collected after the second rabies shot and the effective rabies vaccination period.

Also, the departure has to be within the validity period of the second dose of rabies and the validity of the antibodies test. If the conditions are met, your pet is not subjected to a 180-day quarantine otherwise will have to stay at the detention facility of Animal Quarantine Service.

5. Advance Notification

Quarantine Service must be notified 40 days before the departure of the pet for Approval of Import Inspection of Animals. Any delay in the advanced notification will not be accepted. Hence make sure to give an advanced notification with all the required documents to avoid any delays in the departure of your pet.

6. Health check-up

Your pet has to go through a mandatory health check-up for the assurance of well-being and absence of any clinical signs of rabies and leptospirosis.

7. Health certificate from the exporting country.

You will have to submit the pet's health certificate. The health certificate has to be issued by a veterinary doctor and should include all the relevant details:

  • ● Pet's information
  • ● Microchip number and date of implanting
  • ● Rabies vaccination dates, effective period, product name, and kind of vaccine.
  • ● Rabies antibody test blood sampling date, antibody titer, along with the name of the laboratory
  • ● Date and test report of clinical inspection.

The health certificate has to be submitted to the Animal Quarantine Service.
