Pets as excess baggage in cargo hold

Cats and dogs weighing more than 8 kg including the weight of their travel kennel have to be transported as excess baggage in the cargo hold. The Lufthansa cargo holds are air-conditioned and hence your pet's comfort is properly taken care of. For relocating your pets as excess baggage through Lufthansa Airlines, you will have to register at least 72 hours prior to travelling or you can contact the service centre 24 hours before travelling.

Requirements for transporting your pets

• Pets are not allowed in cargo-holds in the connecting flights via Munich.
• Only 2 pets(dogs and cats are allowed)
• The pets can only travel through IATA-approved travel kennels. The kennel has to be locked using screws. No plastic locking systems are permitted.
• The minimum age of the pets to be transported has to be 12 weeks and 15 weeks if travelling from/to/via Germany.
• Fighting and snub-nosed dogs and cats breeds have to be carried in special travel kennels. An exception is there for 3 to 6 months fighting and snub-nosed dogs and cat breeds, which can travel in normal travel crates.
• Compliance with the import and export rules of the country you are relocating your pet to is your responsibility. In case of non-compliance with any of the rules and regulations, Lufthansa Airlines can refuse the carriage of your pet. In some cases, these pets can be transported as air freight in the cargo hold of Lufthansa Airlines. In case of refusal to carry your pets, because of non-compliance to any rules and regulations, the responsibility for any financial burdens would be completely on you.
